Writing Advice

I don’t currently belong to a critique group, but I have been a member of several groups over the years. I think groups can be a significant advantage for new writers who want to receive feedback on their work. But there is always the danger that criticisms or the misguided advice of others can lead the writer in a direction he or she doesn’t want to go, and soon the story belongs to the group and not to the writer. So it is always important to investigate and interview the group early on to be sure you are compatible with it.

By the way, the same is true of writers conferences. A new writer, perhaps even an established writer, can be overwhelmed or seduced by the professionals who are there to critique and guide but not necessarily make your writing decisions for you. I do believe that many writers can benefit from working with a writing coach.
